- Career Pathway: Computer Engineering
Tristan Dobrowney: I am currently in my last year at the University of Manitoba, pursuing a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering as part of the co-op program. I have been a recipient of the NSERC student research award, working in the electromagnetic imaging lab. My professional experience includes internships at Price Electronics as an Embedded Design Engineer and at MacDon Industries, where I currently work part-time as a Controls Application Engineer Intern. I have been on the Dean’s list throughout my studies.
TRISTAN’S STORY
“I joined the DTRC in 2008 when I began my professional dance career. Over the years, I’ve used Skills Grants for driver’s licenses and attended workshops on taxes and running a business. When COVID hit, I turned to DTRC’s Counselling services for career guidance. That led me to pursue computer engineering. I used the remainder of my Skills Grants to take a required chemistry course and later received financial support, including the FTS-1 Subsistence Grant and Retraining Grant, which paid for my first year of tuition. I also received the Peter F. Bronfman Memorial Award and Amanda Hancox Scholarship in years 2 and 3, respectively. With the DTRC’s help, I was able to focus on my studies and family as a new father. Following my graduation I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in computer architecture.
Without DTRC’s support, it would have been impossible for me to balance extra work, studying, and time with my family. Their financial assistance allowed me to focus on my engineering studies and spend quality time with my wife and daughter without extra stress. The DTRC truly made my career transition possible. I encourage all dancers to join the DTRC, even if you don’t need support now, because their services will be invaluable when you need them.”
