  • Career Pathway: Firefighter

Tyler Gledhill is currently employed by Toronto Fire Services, assigned to Station 315 downtown. As firefighting has a very flexible schedule, he is able to still take on the odd dance project. “I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found two careers I am so passionate about and that I can work in them simultaneously.”

TYLER’S STORY

“As a dancer, I knew that the next step for me would not be a move to a different role within the dance world, such as choreography or teaching. I wanted to make a big shift, but I still wanted to work in a dynamic environment. The DTRC initially helped me with my career transition in 2017 with a retraining grant to put toward my tuition for fire college. In 2019, I received a skills grant to help acquire a truck driver’s license. Finally, the DTRC gave me another skills grant when I became certified as an emergency medical responder.

I was excited to hear about the DTRC as a young dancer. Just knowing that there would one day be support for me when I make the (somewhat scary) decision to transition out of dance and into another industry. I think it gave me the freedom to enjoy my dance career just a little more.

Support as a dancer by a small, tight-knit community and support for taking a large leap into another industry – both have been paramount.”
