- Career Pathway: Speech-Language Pathologist
Julie Anctil: I am completing a Master’s degree at Université de Montréal to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. This is a highly selective program, part of the faculty of medicine. I have been admitted after completing a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. After 5 years of intensive study, I will become a health professional who can help people of all ages with their communication.
JULIE’S STORY
“During my dance years, I received Skills Grants and Career Counselling from DTRC. When I started my Masters in Speech-Language Pathology, I obtained a Retraining Grant and a Subsistence Grant. And for my final year, I am proud and grateful to have been awarded the Amanda Hancox Scholarship. Being a mother of two girls and a full-time student, I was hoping to get financial support. During my studies, I experienced life challenges… I went through major surgery, and I lost my older sister to cancer. My dance years have taught me to persevere even when I felt overwhelmed. I found the strength to pursue my studies, with the kind support of my friends in school, and the strong feeling that people at DTRC believed in my success.
After giving birth to my second daughter at 43, I considered changing careers. Knowing that I could get financial support from the DTRC has helped me make my decision to engage in a full-time university program. To me, the Special Award is a recognition of all the efforts I made as a student, but more importantly, as a dancer. I believe perseverance is a dancer’s greatest transferable skill. I am grateful that this organization exists and encouraged me throughout the years.”
