NICKESHIA’S STORY

“In the past couple of years, I have been slowly transitioning from being predominantly a collaborator in other works to creating and building my solo shows, along with being a co-choreographer and co-founder of CinnaMoon Collective, a newly formed multidisciplinary collective, founded by Irma Villafuerte and myself. These new ventures have opened up opportunities to teach and share my practice with a broader audience, and the DTRC Skills Grant aided in this transition. My current research for my new solo work, “the ties that Bind us, the ties that Bond us”, is taking me to the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum in North Buxton, Ontario, which is a 3-hour drive outside of Toronto. Normally, I would have to ask a friend, find a way through transit or Uber to these locations which isn’t always reliable or ideal, but, the DTRC Skills Grant pushed me to achieve my driver’s licence as a mid-career artist, making it far more accessible to further my research outside of the city as I transition into this next phase of my artistic career.

I would love to acknowledge the DTRC for their Skills Grant because it helped me accomplish my driver’s license, offering more ease in expanding my performance practice outside of Toronto.”
