THOENN’S STORY

“For over a decade I was professionally engaged in dance – my first love. It was a gratifying career, yet eventually it was time to pour my passion into something new. After extensive career exploration, facilitated through the DTRC, I decided to pursue physiotherapy. Shifting into academia was daunting, in large part because I had zero accredited education and needed to start from scratch to get a 4-year degree before I could even apply for PT school. With financial support from the DTRC, and the incredible dance faculty at Simon Fraser University, I was able to accelerate through my degree thus becoming eligible for postgraduate opportunities. I was fortunate to be accepted into the U of A Physical Therapy program and, in August 2021, I moved to Edmonton to begin, with the massive assistance of a full DTRC Retraining Grant. I graduated in the winter of 2023, after receiving Special Awards to assist in the completion of my studies. This new career is everything and more than I thought it would be, and my skills as an artist, a dancer, and an entrepreneur have been a huge asset to my new role as a health professional.

The DTRC has literally been with me every step of the way from my first year in Arts Umbrella (2007), throughout my dance career (2009-2020) and throughout the process of transitioning from dance into physiotherapy (2016-2024). For that I am truly grateful.
