STEPHEN’S STORY

“Transitioning out of a career in the performing arts felt like a lonely, uphill journey. Leaving what is considered a ‘passion career’ puts an extra pressure to find a new profession that will provide the same full, enriching life experiences that come with making a living from the performing arts. Having an organization that provides resources, supports, and that acts as a sort of home base during the tribulations of career transition puts a lot of mental unease at bay. The DTRC was one of the first phone calls I made when I started to get the impulse to transition. As a member who needed to finish an undergraduate degree before starting their career-focused program, DTRC helped me get ready to transition. I was able to use their Skills Grants during my undergraduate degree, which prepared me for chiropractic college. During my time at chiropractic college, I was first awarded the FTS-I Grant, and then three subsequent Special Awards:  The Peter F. Bronfman Award, The Anne Delicaet Bursary, and the Joan and Jerry Lozinski/Amanda Hancox Award.

The DTRC has been one of the arts organizations with the most impact on my life. When I was ready to leave my performing arts career, the DTRC was fundamental in giving me the space, support, and resources to ensure I would continue a life of following my passions, interests, and talents. I am so grateful for the DTRC, the many conversations about what and how I was going to make such a huge life shift, and for the continuing sense of community.

The DTRC provided me with support to help me shape the vision of my new career. Hearing other stories from dancers who had transitioned before me also helped keep me in a place of positivity and self-belief.
