Vive la Danse!, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre (DTRC)’s 21st Anniversary fundraising gala, was held on April 19, 2007 at Toronto’s Palais Royale Ballroom, and was generously sponsored by BMO Financial Group.

The star-studded gala, directed by Prima Ballerina Veronica Tennant and hosted by the National Ballet of Canada’s Rex Harrington and Little Mosque on the Prairie’s Sheila McCarthy, celebrated the DTRC’s 21 years and feted DTRC founder and winner of the 2006 Governor General’s Award, Joysanne Sidimus. The evening offered an array of dance and musical entertainment, featuring some of Canada’s top performers, including Greta Hodgkinson, Colm Feore, Jane Bunnett, Jean Stilwell and Patti Loach.

The grande finale of the evening, a spectacular number set to the music from A Chorus Line featured 21 DTRC Alumni, all former dancers, now in an impressive range of second careers. Walter Wittich, a Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at McGill University, Betsy Carson, a Genie Award winning film producer, John Kellner, a Pilot & Flight Instructor, and Paula Ravitz, Assistant Professor and Head of University of Toronto’s Psychotherapy program were among the 21 who, through their remarkable transition stories, represented the thousands of dancers assisted by the DTRC during its 21 years.

“It was such a touching moment and underlined in a meaningful and tangible way the raison d’etre of the DTRC,” comments DTRC Executive Director Amanda Hancox. “Dancers acquire extraordinary levels of self-discipline, tenacity and creative problem solving skills throughout their vigorous training and performing careers. With the right support, dancers are able to transfer those skills to new professions."

The evening was a huge success. Vive la Danse!  raised more than $150 000 for dancers in transition.
