Choreographing Consent: Intimacy for the stage with Tonia Sina

2017 / 12 / 21

In light of an urgent health concern for our facilitator, DTRC, DUO, CADA-ON, and Dance Ontario have postponed  Choreographing Consent: Intimacy for the stage with Tonia Sina .

We continue to believe that the language and skills required to stage intimacy safely are of vital importance, and we are committed to providing this training with the most established and respected professionals in the field of intimacy directing.

We hope you will join us for this workshop as soon as we are able to welcome Tonia Sina to Toronto. Please email communications@dtrc.ca to be notified as soon as we have an alternate date confirmed.

Tonia Sina, founder of Intimacy Directors International, is bringing her performance intimacy training to the Toronto dance community. This 3-hour workshop begins with the premise that the rehearsal and performance of physical contact requires a shared language and standardized protocols to ensure that artists are free to create while having professional and personal boundaries respected.

Assisted by Jade McRae, Tonia will provide a language and process-based foundation for performers and choreographers to work with human contact in a way that is professional, dynamic, and connected to their work's choreographic vision.

Participants will engage in exercises designed to create an understanding of consent versus permission, and being attuned to the needs of your fellow performers. The workshop aims to provide a safe space for performers and creators to explore their physical and emotional boundaries outside of the high-pressure environment of the stage and rehearsal hall. There will be a significant pedagogical focus, allowing artists to take the tools of performing intimacy into their creative environments.

When: Sunday, January 14th - 12:30pm-3:30pm

Where: Canada's National Ballet School (400 Jarvis St.)

This workshop is co-hosted by DTRC, Dance Ontario, Dance Umbrella of Ontario and CADA-ON. Registration is $25 for members of any of these organizations. Registration for non-members is $35.

Tonia was most recently the Intimacy Choreographer for the production of The Bakkhai at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada, as well as an international sexual harassment prevention advisor for theatre companies.  Recently featured in the NY Times, she is the former Artistic Director of Reduxion Theatre Company in Oklahoma City, and an international Intimacy for the Stage workshop teacher and choreographer.
